General Polishing Instructions

General Instructions For Polishing

Suppliers of an extensive range of polishing products and accessories to professionals, retailers and the DIY enthusiast.

What is Polishing

Polishing sometimes known as finishing, buffing or colouring is the process of removing scratches and abrasions from a surface, and creating the desired brightness of finish on thatSS Polishing Kit surface.  Polishing, like using sand paper, consists of procedures each of which is less abrasive than the previous. A combination of mops and compounds are used with a buffing machine or a household electric drill (pneumatic tools may also be used but only at relatively low speeds (4000 rpm max.)

Different combinations of polishing wheel and compound gives the desired cut / colouring action and finish. To avoid contamination or mixing of compounds use a different mop for each compound. Do not mix different compounds on the same mop. Alternatively “freshen” the polishing wheel with a wire Alloy wheel kitbrush to remove residue compound and metal from the wheel.

If you are polishing small articles then you can fix your drill into a vice, this will enable you to polish these small articles with ease.

Sometimes when you have polished you may see a slight coat of grease or finger marks on the work piece, these can be removed with Whiting Powder followed by Liquid Reflection or Mirrorfinish Metal Polish to complete the job.

If you wish to Electroplate or lacquer the polished article please make sure you use a good degreaser and do not protect with wax polish. Any dirt or grease/wax will interfere with the FullSizeRenderadhesion of the plated metal or lacquer.

Safety First!

Always make sure that the machine you are working with is in safe working order i.e. bench grinder is securely fastened to your work bench, adaptors polishing wheels are securely fastened etc.

Always use safety equipment- Dust mask, safety spectacles and gloves should be worn at all times.

Always apply the item being finished to the area of the mop which is rotating away from yourself.

Do not wear loose clothing that may get caught in the machine.

Surface Polishing Preparation

Unclean/dirty/greasy material should be prepared properly before being polished. For polishing soft metals and depending on the surface condition, start at 6 on the step by step guide above. Should parts be heavily scratched, marked or scored then suitable abrasives should be used.( flap wheel, abrasive cloth/paper, rubbing blocks etc. )

In many instances the surface of what you are polishing will need to be prepared prior to polishing. The preparation really depends on the condition of the surface and the desired finish you require. The devil is in the detail hence the better you prepare the surface the better the final result. The use of wet/dry abrasive papers and discs may be required and the finer the abrasive, generally the easier and more impressive the polished finish.

Step By Step Guide To Polishing

  1. 1. Attach arbour to your drill or spindle adapter to your bench grinder / polisher and fix tightly.
  2. 2. Attach Sisal Mop onto the arbour/adapter and screw on tightly.
  3. 3. Run the drill / bench grinder / polisher and apply the relevant compound to the sisal mop for approx. 2 seconds, the compound is wax / abrasive based so the motion of the spinning mop generates heat which melts the wax/abrasive onto the polishing mop.
  4. 4. Apply the mop to the item to be polished with medium/hard pressure. It is very important that you remove all marks/scratches and leave a uniform finish.
  5. 5. Apply more compound to the Sisal Mop if needed. When all scratches/marks are removed and the work piece has a uniform dull finish, remove the Sisal polishing mop.
  6. 6. Attach the White Stitch / Colour Stitch Mop onto the arbour/adapter and screw on tightly. Run the machine and apply the relevant compound to the White Stitch / Colour Stitch Mop for approx. 2 seconds.
  7. 7. Apply the mop to the item to be polished with medium pressure. This will remove the dull finish left by the first process and leave the work piece with a semi-bright finish.
  8. 8. Apply more compound to the White Stitch / Colour Stitch Mop if needed. When you have a uniform semi-bright finish, remove the White Stitch / Colour Stitch Mop.
  9. 9. Attach either the unstitched B Quality Mop onto arbour / adapter and screw on tightly.

Run the drill / bench grinder / polisher and apply the relevant compound to the unstitched B or G Mop for approx. 2 seconds.

  1. 10. Apply the mop to the item to be polished with light pressure. This will remove the semi bright finish left by the second process and leave the work piece with a bright finish. Apply more compound to the unstitched Mop if needed and repeat the process.

You should now be left with a bright finish.

  1. Using a clean microfiber cloth, rub the polished article with Whiting Powder/Vienne Lime or Liquid Reflection, Reflection paste or Blue Sapphire. This will remove any residue compound, metal and grease left on the surface and provide you the polished finish.

TipsTips

Try to constantly vary the directions of which you polish. This is not always possible but recommended as some articles may be of an unsuitable size and shape.

Use compound sparingly, black grease marks will appear on work piece if too much compound has been applied to the mop. Remove black grease marks with cloth. Remember little and often. If it is possible, polish across marks/scratches not along them.

If the surface of work piece is lacquered you must remove the lacquer before polishing.
Spindle adaptor kitDrill-Polisher-Grinder Adaptors

Spindle adaptors, tapered Mandrels are used to secure your polishing wheels onto your drill machine, bench grinder, variable speed polisher/grinder etc.

Before purchasing an adaptor check the dimensions of the shaft and threads to see if we have the relevant adaptors for your machine.

Description Of  Polishing Wheels & Mops

VL 500gVienne Lime Cleaning Powder Or Whiting Powder: Excellent for use with our polishing kits. Use this after you have finished polishing to remove grease and compound residues after polishing. Apply it to a clean lint free cloth/microfibre and wipe where you’ve been polishing. Please note that Vienna Lime is not an actual lime powder but a pure form of super fine calcium carbonate (chalk). This will save you time and effort as opposed to using white spirit or other methods.

PolishesLiquid Reflect, Blue Sapphire, Mirrorfinish metal polishes and many others are used in your final application to maintain a long lasting bright finish to your polished surface. These polishes can be used in the maintenance of your polished items as well.

POLISH TIPS

Power Buffer

If the damaged area is fairly large or badly damaged, a power buffer may be used with NOVUS No. 2 and No. 3. Use a clean cotton bonnet and operate the buffer at a low speed to avoid overheating the plastic, approximately 1,000 RPM. Each polish should be applied with a seperate, clean bonnet.

Before Polishing

Before attempting to clean or remove scratches, always make sure the plastic is cool to the touch. Use a liberal amount of plastic cleaner to safely remove surface dust and dirt. In addition, test scratch removers in a small or inconspicuous area for compatibility.

Coated Plastics

Some plastics are coated with a thin film which may be damaged by the abrasives in the polish. NOVUS No. 2 and No. 3 Polishes are not recommended for use on coated plastics or eyeglass lenses.

Polishing Cloth

The type of polishing cloth you use will make a difference. The ideal cloth is nonabrasive, absorbent and lint free. To eliminate any chance of scratching, use only disposable cloths. Reusable cloths can retain abrasive particles, but you won’t know for sure until the damage is done. Use a soft cotton cloth (such as a diaper), avoid using polyester or rayon wipes which can scratch unprotected plastics.

FINE SCRATCH REMOVER

Removes fine scratches, haziness and abrasions from most plastics. With repeated use, NOVUS No. 2 restores faded and discolored plastics.

  • Removes the damage instead of filling it in
  • Buffs out quickly
  • After restoring, seals with a coat of polish
  1. Observe condition of the surface to be treated. The deeper the scratches, the greater the pressure required to remove them. If the surface is dirty, clean with NOVUS No.1 before applying NOVUS No. 2.
  2. Shake well. Test in an inconspicuous area.
  3. Apply NOVUS No. 2 liberally. Using a clean, soft cloth, polish with a firm back-and-forth motion at right angles to the scratches. Keep the cloth saturated with polish at all times.
  4. When the worst scratches have been polished out, reapply NOVUS No.2 uniformly in a circular motion to the entire surface using short, circular strokes and light pressure. Allow to dry to a light haze.
  5. Using a clean portion of the cloth, buff the surface to a slippery glaze using firm, short strokes. This procedure is imperative in achieving the best results.
  6. For heavy scratches, multiple applications of NOVUS No. 2 or application of NOVUS No. 3 may be required.
  7. Follow with NOVUS No. 1 for best results.

PLASTIC CLEAN & SHINE

Gently cleans all plastics without scratching. Leaves a lustrous shine that resists fogging, repels dust, and eliminates static.

  • Resists finger marking
  • Contains no abrasives or harsh chemicals
  • Leaves a smooth, clean, greaseless shine
  1. If the surface is extremely dirty, apply NOVUS No. 1 liberally and wipe using long, sweeping strokes. Do not use pressure at this time or large dirt particles may scratch the plastic.
  2. Re-apply NOVUS No. 1. Polish using short, circular strokes with a clean portion of the cloth.
  3. When surface is thoroughly clean and uniformly covered, buff to a slippery glaze with a clean portion of the cloth. Surfaces buffed to a high glaze are more resistant to dust and future scratching.
  4. Reapply NOVUS No. 1 regularly to maintain the antistatic, smudge and scratch resistant properties.

HEAVY SCRATCH REMOVER

Removes heavy scratches and abrasions from most acrylic surfaces. Use when damage is too severe to be restored with NOVUS No. 2 polish.

  • Requires use of NOVUS No. 2 for final finishing
  • Not recommended for use on coated plastics
  1. Shake well. Test in an inconspicuous area.
  2. Apply NOVUS No. 3 liberally. Using a clean, soft cloth, polish with a firm back-and-forth motion at right angles to the scratches. Keep the cloth saturated with polish at all times.
  3. Continue polishing until only fine scratches remain. Using cloth, remove all remaining polish, this is very important!
  4. Using a clean cloth, apply NOVUS No. 2 in a circular motion uniformly to entire surface. Polish using light pressure until NOVUS No. 2 dries to a light haze.
  5. Using a clean portion of the cloth, buff the surface clean. Follow with NOVUS No. 1 for best results.

NOVUS PREMIUM POLISH MATES

This microfilament cloth is perfect for polishing. Highly absorbent, extra durable and abrasion resistant makes this washable cloth the ideal solution.

The type of polishing cloth you use will make a difference. This ideal cloth is nonabrasive, absorbent, and lint free. To eliminate any chance of scratching, use only disposable cloths. Reusable cloths can retain abrasive particles, but you won’t know for sure until the damage is done.

Forever Black – Black Top Gel

Excellent vinyl convertible black top restoration

BLACK TOP GEL

Forever Black Black-Top Convertible Top Dye is a permanent black dye that instantly restores lustre and deep, dark colour to faded, black vinyl convertible tops. No need to have a faded, sun beaten convertible top and there’s no simpler way to restore it and make your convertible look new again.  Forever Black Black-Top is an instant solution to years of UV degradation.

Forever Black Black-Top is an excellent black dye that re-colours the vinyl to create a rich, deep, black luster. Black-Top should only be used on vinyl type tops,  for your convertible, bimini  or ute tray vinyl cover. It’s not recommended for fabrics. The dye’s unique polymers bond the pigment to the vinyl for long-lasting colour restoration.

Forever Black Black-Top is completely safe on vinyl. The water-based, environmentally friendly formula contains no silicone or oil. These ingredients can dry the vinyl and cause it to attract dust. A top treated with Forever Black Black-Top retains its suppleness and the non-glossy finish does not attract dust.

To prolong its colour, Forever Black Black-Top contains UV protectants and it is water repellent. Throughout a vehicle’s life, the sun’s UV rays will fade and dry out any unprotected surface. This combination of restoration and protection will keep your convertible top looking its best for up to 12 months. What’s the last product you used that lasted a year with one application?

Remember only use Forever Black Black-Top on a black vinyl top. It is not intended to dye tops of other colours and it is not intended for fabric tops.

It is recommend that you clean the vinyl top well before applying Forever Black Black-Top to ensure even colour. After the top is completely dry, use the foam applicator included with every bottle of Black-Top to apply thin, even strokes across the top. Complete the entire job at the same time to avoid patchy results. Wipe off any drips on paint, glass, plastic, or metal. Allow 15 minutes to dry. Note: Wear old clothes and use an old towel for clean-up as the dye will stain fabrics.

For instant colour restoration of black vinyl convertible tops use Forever Black Black-Top. Easy of use, with long-lasting results, and way more cost-effective than replacing your convertible top.

What customers have said about the products

“I recently purchased some Forever BLACK Bumper & Trim Reconditioner for my wife’s car. The vinyl was very faded and going white. After applying the Bumper & Trim Reconditioner it has transformed her car. I was amazed with the results. I have used many vinyl treatments, but this beats them hands down. I will recommend your products to everyone!”

Ryan, Republic of Ireland

“I recently used the Forever BLACK Bumper & Trim Reconditioner on a 21 year old Renault 5. I wasn’t sure if it would work as the bumpers and side trims were faded to white. After a few applications, the car looked brilliant and all of the plastic bumpers and side panels looked like new. I have had neighbors asking if I have had the car professionally restored – that’s how good it looks! I just wanted to say what a great product this is and I have and will continue to recommend this product to everyone I know.
Thanks very much for an item that does exactly what it says it does on the bottle.”

Michael, via email

“Ok, your Forever BLACK Bumper & Trim Reconditioner is about the greatest thing I have ever found for use on a car or truck. The Forever BLACK Bed Liner Gel also worked very well on my spray-in Rhino liner. Thank you for all of your help, support and for being part of such a great product!”

Russ, South Carolina

“We own a 1991 Honda. The paint was failing and my wife was lobbying for a new car. However, the car still drives great. We decided to get a paint job. Once we had the car painted, the side moldings and bumpers looked really bad – mottled and gray. My wife googled and found your product. It really made a difference. We used the Forever BLACK Bumper & Trim Reconditioner and now the car looks like its brand new. I liked the Bumper & Trim Reconditioner’s applicator for spreading the product around. It was easy to control and to achieve an even finish. So, with your help our old car looks new again and I’m not making car payments! I’m glad we found you!”
