General Metal Polishing Instructions

General Instructions For Polishing

Suppliers of an extensive range of polishing products and accessories to professionals, retailers and the DIY enthusiast.

What is Polishing

Polishing sometimes known as finishing, buffing or colouring is the process of removing scratches and abrasions from a surface, and creating the desired brightness of finish on that surface.  Polishing, like using sand paper, consists of procedures each of which is less abrasive than the previous. A combination of mops and compounds are used with a buffing machine or a household electric drill (pneumatic tools may also be used but only at relatively low speeds (4000 rpm max.)

Different combinations of polishing wheel and compound gives the desired cut / colouring action and finish. To avoid contamination or mixing of compounds use a different mop for each compound. Do not mix different compounds on the same mop. Alternatively “freshen” the polishing wheel with a wire brush to remove residue compound and metal from the wheel.

Drill mounted Polishing Kits

Drill mounted polishing kits for those small, tighter spots

If you are polishing small articles then you can fix your drill into a vice, this will enable you to polish these small articles with ease.

Sometimes when you have polished you may see a slight coat of grease or finger marks on the work piece, these can be removed with Whiting Powder followed by Liquid Reflection or Mirrorfinish Metal Polish to complete the job.

If you wish to Electroplate or lacquer the polished article please make sure you use a good degreaser and do not protect with wax polish. Any dirt or grease/wax will interfere with the adhesion of the plated metal or lacquer.

Surface Polishing Preparation

Unclean/dirty/greasy material should be prepared properly before being polished. For polishing soft metals and depending on the surface condition, start at 6 on the step by step guide above. Should parts be heavily scratched, marked or scored then suitable abrasives should be used.( flap wheel, abrasive cloth/paper, rubbing blocks etc. )

In many instances the surface of what you are polishing will need to be prepared prior to polishing. The preparation really depends on the condition of the surface and the desired finish you require. The devil is in the detail hence the better you prepare the surface the better the final result. The use of wet/dry abrasive papers and discs may be required and the finer the abrasive, generally the easier and more impressive the polished finish.

Polishing Wheel Spindle Adaptor KitDrill-Polisher-Grinder Adaptors

Spindle adaptors, tapered Mandrels are used to secure your polishing wheels onto your drill machine, bench grinder, variable speed polisher/grinder etc.

Before purchasing an adaptor check the dimensions of the shaft and threads to see if we have the relevant adaptors for your machine.

Description Of  Polishing Wheels & Mops

Sisal Polishing Wheel.6inch Treated Sisal_edited-2

These are very fast cutting and hard, they are particularly useful for first stage heavy duty mopping operations on steel and non-ferrous metals. They will remove grinding marks left from previous operations, when processing steel, stainless steel or non-ferrous metals and are usually used in conjunction with a coarse cutting stainless steel polish.

CS setColour Stitch     White Stitch Polishing Wheels.WS set

Versatile cutting mops used for general polishing, can be used for first stage polishing with Brown polishing compound on soft metals (brass, copper, etc), or for second stage polishing on hard metals with Pink polishing compound.

4 x 1sec LF SetLoose Flap Quality Polishing Wheel.

A harder grade of loose mop which is commonly used as an alternative to white stitch mops. Very popular for precious metals.

SD setSwansdown (WDR) Polishing Wheels

A very soft grade of finishing mop. WDR means “white double raised” and these wheels are also know as Swansdown wheels. Generally used for soft precious metals, jewellery etc. in the final finish.

Airflows_edited-1Airflow Treated and Untreaded Polishing Wheels

Quality materials are used in the manufacture of these wheels, ensuring a longer mop life and greater output compared with conventional mops. They are very clean in operation and are specially suited for heavy duty moping and finishing on metals, plastics and other non metallic materials. The treated Airflow wheels are more aggressive and used in the cutting, first stage of polishing whilst the untreated airflows are for finishing.

Mandrel MopsDome Cylinder Goblet Polishing WheelsSisal Mandrel Kit

Supplied in sisal and calico these drill mounted polishing mops are used to access tight and difficult to reach areas.

Excellent for use in maintenance kits, the calico mops can be used with most of our compounds.  The sisal mops can effectively be used with our cutting compounds.

Felt BobsMounted Felt Cylinder Bob

Versatile across many mediums, these medium density points will work on stone, ceramics, metals, as well as jewellery. Bonded onto a 3mm/6mm shaft that fits most rotary tools or drill machines. These felts tools are a popular and economical method of polishing when used in conjunction with compounds.

Safety First!

Always make sure that the machine you are working with is in safe working order i.e. bench grinder is securely fastened to your work bench, adaptors polishing wheels are securely fastened etc.

Always use safety equipment- Dust mask, safety spectacles and gloves should be worn at all times.

Always apply the item being finished to the area of the mop which is rotating away from yourself.

Do not wear loose clothing that may get caught in the machine.

Restoring Stainless Steel Sinks

Kits to revitalise your scratched sink to a high new finish.

Step By Step Guide To Polishing

  1. 1. Attach arbour to your drill or spindle adapter to your bench grinder / polisher and fix tightly.
  2. 2. Attach Sisal Mop onto the arbour/adapter and screw on tightly.
  3. 3. Run the drill / bench grinder / polisher and apply the relevant compound to the sisal mop for approx. 2 seconds, the compound is wax / abrasive based so the motion of the spinning mop generates heat which melts the wax/abrasive onto the polishing mop.
  4. 4. Apply the mop to the item to be polished with medium/hard pressure. It is very important that you remove all marks/scratches and leave a uniform finish.
  5. 5. Apply more compound to the Sisal Mop if needed. When all scratches/marks are removed and the work piece has a uniform dull finish, remove the Sisal polishing mop.
  6. 6. Attach the White Stitch / Colour Stitch Mop onto the arbour/adapter and screw on tightly. Run the machine and apply the relevant compound to the White Stitch / Colour Stitch Mop for approx. 2 seconds.
  7. 7. Apply the mop to the item to be polished with medium pressure. This will remove the dull finish left by the first process and leave the work piece with a semi-bright finish.
  8. 8. Apply more compound to the White Stitch / Colour Stitch Mop if needed. When you have a uniform semi-bright finish, remove the White Stitch / Colour Stitch Mop.
  9. 9. Attach either the unstitched B Quality Mop onto arbour / adapter and screw on tightly.

Run the drill / bench grinder / polisher and apply the relevant compound to the unstitched B or G Mop for approx. 2 seconds.

  1. 10. Apply the mop to the item to be polished with light pressure. This will remove the semi bright finish left by the second process and leave the work piece with a bright finish. Apply more compound to the unstitched Mop if needed and repeat the process.

You should now be left with a bright finish.

  1. Using a clean microfiber cloth, rub the polished article with Whiting Powder/Vienne Lime or Liquid Reflection, Reflection paste or Blue Sapphire. This will remove any residue compound, metal and grease left on the surface and provide you the polished finish.

TipsTips

Try to constantly vary the directions of which you polish. This is not always possible but recommended as some articles may be of an unsuitable size and shape.

Use compound sparingly, black grease marks will appear on work piece if too much compound has been applied to the mop. Remove black grease marks with cloth. Remember little and often. If it is possible, polish across marks/scratches not along them.

If the surface of work piece is lacquered you must remove the lacquer before polishing.

Description Of Polishing Compounds

There is a substantial range of cutting, polishing, buffing compounds suited to different levels finishes depending on the polishing wheel and compound combinations.

Blue-1 copyBlue bar = Multishine: The multi-purpose finishing compound. Suitable for all metals. Also performs well as a cutter if used on a hard cotton or sisal buff.

Tripoli-1Brown bar = Tripoli: Combined cutting and finishing compound for soft metals only. Suitable for alloys, aluminium, brass, copper and zinc diecast. Follow up with a finishing compound if a brighter surface is required.

GREY-1Grey bar =Course Cutter: A fast and economical cutter for hard metals. The rate of metal removal is high, with less emphasis on brightness. To be used on sisal buffs for the removal of scratches and “orange peel” from all metals.

GREEN-1Green bar = green Chrome: For mirror finishing with minimal cut. Best used after a perfect cutting or prepolishing operation. Polishes all metals to high brightness when used on a soft cotton buff.

White-1White bar = SS Finish: For high brightness and good cut. Suitable for all metals, including stainless steel. Recommended for surfaces that are smooth to begin with and are free of deep scratches. Use a sisal buff for cutting and a cotton buff for bright finishing.

LBROWN-1Terracotta bar = Bright Cut DX:  A fast cutter for all metals with medium brightness. May be used on a sisal buff for cutting, followed on a cotton buff for medium brightness.

VL 500gVienne Lime Cleaning Powder Or Whiting Powder: Excellent for use with our polishing kits. Use this after you have finished polishing to remove grease and compound residues after polishing. Apply it to a clean lint free cloth/microfibre and wipe where you’ve been polishing. Please note that Vienna Lime is not an actual lime powder but a pure form of super fine calcium carbonate (chalk). This will save you time and effort as opposed to using white spirit or other methods.

PolishesLiquid Reflect, Blue Sapphire, Mirrorfinish metal polishes and many others are used in your final application to maintain a long lasting bright finish to your polished surface. These polishes can be used in the maintenance of your polished items as well.

wet1Surface Preparation Abrasives

Flap wheels are designed to be flexible and conform themselves to the shape being sanded. Flap wheels flex to the different dimensions and shapes of the work piece and sand flat, high and low areas with the same effectiveness. Surfaces include wood, metal, plastics, rubber, stone. Wet and dry abrasives up to 2000grit are ideal for the surface preparation of most metals and can be used before moving onto the buffs and compound combinations.

“Ok, your Forever BLACK Bumper & Trim Reconditioner is about the greatest thing I have ever found for use on a car or truck. The Forever BLACK Bed Liner Gel also worked very well on my spray-in Rhino liner. Thank you for all of your help, support and for being part of such a great product!”

Russ, South Carolina

“We own a 1991 Honda. The paint was failing and my wife was lobbying for a new car. However, the car still drives great. We decided to get a paint job. Once we had the car painted, the side moldings and bumpers looked really bad – mottled and gray. My wife googled and found your product. It really made a difference. We used the Forever BLACK Bumper & Trim Reconditioner and now the car looks like its brand new. I liked the Bumper & Trim Reconditioner’s applicator for spreading the product around. It was easy to control and to achieve an even finish. So, with your help our old car looks new again and I’m not making car payments! I’m glad we found you!”

Bill, Louisiana

“I recently purchased some Forever BLACK Bumper & Trim Reconditioner for my wife’s car. The vinyl was very faded and going white. After applying the Bumper & Trim Reconditioner it has transformed her car. I was amazed with the results. I have used many vinyl treatments, but this beats them hands down. I will recommend your products to everyone!”

Ryan, Republic of Ireland

“I recently used the Forever BLACK Bumper & Trim Reconditioner on a 21 year old Renault 5. I wasn’t sure if it would work as the bumpers and side trims were faded to white. After a few applications, the car looked brilliant and all of the plastic bumpers and side panels looked like new. I have had neighbors asking if I have had the car professionally restored – that’s how good it looks! I just wanted to say what a great product this is and I have and will continue to recommend this product to everyone I know.
Thanks very much for an item that does exactly what it says it does on the bottle.”

Alloy, Stainless Steel Metal Polish Called Blue Sapphire

Liquid and Paste Blue Sapphire

If you are looking for a clever polish that’ll give you a brilliant finish and make your metal surface resonate then this is the polish. Using nano technology, this product has been designed for bikes mainly but can also be used on an extensive variety of metal surfaces. The results will speak for themselves and will definitely be money well spent.

Try it!

Blue Sapphire are metal polishes that impart the same brilliant shine as Liquid Reflection, however it is designed for detailed and intricate surfaces such a motorbike chrome or antiques. After polishing Blue Sapphire dries to a fine powder that is easily brushed or vacuumed off, leaving no residue to adhere to the surface. High pressure air can also be used to blow out left over polish caught in tight nooks and crannies.

Blue sapphire is recommended for Chrome trim over Liquid Reflection as the abrasive is a little finer.

Polish Up Microfiber Cloths

400 x 400mm Microfibre Polishing Cloth

Microfiber cloths are used for cleaning and polishing, are generally constructed from split conjugated fibers of polyester and polyamide.  They can hold up to seven times there weight in water and have exceptional ability to absorb oils, and are not hard enough to scratch even paintwork.

These Microfiber cloths require no cleaning fluid. Ensure that your microfiber cloth is clean and not retaining any grit as it will scratch the surface you are polishing.

They must only be washed in regular washing detergent, not oily, self-softening, soap-based detergents. Fabric softener must not be used. The oils in the softener and self-softening detergents will clog up the fibers and make them less effective until the oils are washed out.

Quality Microfibre

Posted by Co from Quialigo

You get what you pay for !! Remember that when you consider a cheap pack of microfibre from other suppliers. These are top quality and you will know that when you use them because they do what microfibre should, especially when drying smooth surfaces like glass or polished bench tops.

Quality vs Price

There are cheaper options available, but I found the microfibre cloth from Polish Up to be higher quality and you will notice this when it comes to using them. Be aware of quantity packs at what will seem to be “a good price”. You get what you pay for!!

If the damaged area is fairly large or badly damaged, a power buffer may be used with NOVUS No. 2 and No. 3. Use a clean cotton bonnet and operate the buffer at a low speed to avoid overheating the plastic, approximately 1,000 RPM. Each polish should be applied with a seperate, clean bonnet.

Before Polishing

Before attempting to clean or remove scratches, always make sure the plastic is cool to the touch. Use a liberal amount of plastic cleaner to safely remove surface dust and dirt. In addition, test scratch removers in a small or inconspicuous area for compatibility.

Coated Plastics

Some plastics are coated with a thin film which may be damaged by the abrasives in the polish. NOVUS No. 2 and No. 3 Polishes are not recommended for use on coated plastics or eyeglass lenses.

Polishing Cloth

The type of polishing cloth you use will make a difference. The ideal cloth is nonabrasive, absorbent and lint free. To eliminate any chance of scratching, use only disposable cloths. Reusable cloths can retain abrasive particles, but you won’t know for sure until the damage is done. Use a soft cotton cloth (such as a diaper), avoid using polyester or rayon wipes which can scratch unprotected plastics.

FINE SCRATCH REMOVER

Removes fine scratches, haziness and abrasions from most plastics. With repeated use, NOVUS No. 2 restores faded and discolored plastics.

Removes the damage instead of filling it in
Buffs out quickly
After restoring, seals with a coat of polish
Observe condition of the surface to be treated. The deeper the scratches, the greater the pressure required to remove them. If the surface is dirty, clean with NOVUS No.1 before applying NOVUS No. 2.
Shake well. Test in an inconspicuous area.
Apply NOVUS No. 2 liberally. Using a clean, soft cloth, polish with a firm back-and-forth motion at right angles to the scratches. Keep the cloth saturated with polish at all times.
When the worst scratches have been polished out, reapply NOVUS No.2 uniformly in a circular motion to the entire surface using short, circular strokes and light pressure. Allow to dry to a light haze.
Using a clean portion of the cloth, buff the surface to a slippery glaze using firm, short strokes. This procedure is imperative in achieving the best results.
For heavy scratches, multiple applications of NOVUS No. 2 or application of NOVUS No. 3 may be required.
Follow with NOVUS No. 1 for best results.

PLASTIC CLEAN & SHINE

Gently cleans all plastics without scratching. Leaves a lustrous shine that resists fogging, repels dust, and eliminates static.

Resists finger marking
Contains no abrasives or harsh chemicals
Leaves a smooth, clean, greaseless shine
If the surface is extremely dirty, apply NOVUS No. 1 liberally and wipe using long, sweeping strokes. Do not use pressure at this time or large dirt particles may scratch the plastic.
Re-apply NOVUS No. 1. Polish using short, circular strokes with a clean portion of the cloth.
When surface is thoroughly clean and uniformly covered, buff to a slippery glaze with a clean portion of the cloth. Surfaces buffed to a high glaze are more resistant to dust and future scratching.
Reapply NOVUS No. 1 regularly to maintain the antistatic, smudge and scratch resistant properties.

HEAVY SCRATCH REMOVER

Removes heavy scratches and abrasions from most acrylic surfaces. Use when damage is too severe to be restored with NOVUS No. 2 polish.

Requires use of NOVUS No. 2 for final finishing
Not recommended for use on coated plastics
Shake well. Test in an inconspicuous area.
Apply NOVUS No. 3 liberally. Using a clean, soft cloth, polish with a firm back-and-forth motion at right angles to the scratches. Keep the cloth saturated with polish at all times.
Continue polishing until only fine scratches remain. Using cloth, remove all remaining polish, this is very important!
Using a clean cloth, apply NOVUS No. 2 in a circular motion uniformly to entire surface. Polish using light pressure until NOVUS No. 2 dries to a light haze.
Using a clean portion of the cloth, buff the surface clean. Follow with NOVUS No. 1 for best results.

3 x NOVUS PREMIUM POLISH MATES

This microfilament cloth is perfect for polishing. Highly absorbent, extra durable and abrasion resistant makes this washable cloth the ideal solution.

The type of polishing cloth you use will make a difference. This ideal cloth is nonabrasive, absorbent, and lint free. To eliminate any chance of scratching, use only disposable cloths. Reusable cloths can retain abrasive particles, but you won’t know for sure until the damage is done.

The Best Granite and Marble Polish

    Posted by Unknown

After 2 years seaching, and trying hand polishing pads that damaged part of the surface, I’ve found a product that has restored my dull surfaced granite, and gone part way towards covering damage done by “polishing’ pads bought from the USA. I could not find anything for this purpose in the shops, even granite/tiling shops could offer nothing except professional people to come in and use electric buffers

I highly recommend this product, it left me with a darker, glassy smooth surface on benchtops

    Amazing difference

    Posted by Robert

For a start, I noticed a lot more colours in my marble hearth and the light at night really glistens on it.

Before applying the polish, the surface was rough and dull.

The change is amazing after just one application.

    Brilliant Polish

    Posted by Lyn

I purchased Goddards Granite & Marble polish, mainly for the marble top on our vanity but also for our very faded granite slabs in our outdoor table inserts. It is a brilliant product, so easy to use, the marble in the bathroom looks new again. The granite slabs in our outdoor table came up fantastic. It’s a very affordable product and I would certainly recommend it.
