This Product Safety and Safe Use Information provides general guidance for products supplied by Polish Up, including polishing machines, rotating accessories, abrasive products, polishing compounds, cleaners and surface-restoration products.

1. Customer and operator responsibilities

Before using any product supplied by Polish Up, the customer and operator should:

• read all instructions, warnings and labels
• inspect the machine, wheel, accessory and workpiece
• confirm that all components are compatible
• select suitable personal protective equipment
• ensure the work area is appropriately ventilated and illuminated
• remove unnecessary persons from the operating area
• secure the workpiece where appropriate
• understand the hazards associated with the material being polished
• stop and seek advice where compatibility or safety is uncertain

2. Product instructions take priority

Always follow the instructions and warnings supplied with the particular machine, wheel, compound, chemical or accessory.

Where this general information differs from a manufacturer’s product-specific safety instruction, the product-specific instruction should normally be followed unless it appears incorrect or unsafe.

Contact Polish Up before use if instructions appear incomplete, damaged, contradictory or unsuitable for the supplied product.

3. Personal protective equipment

Appropriate personal protective equipment will depend on the product, workpiece, material, operating environment and risk assessment.

Depending on the application, suitable protection may include:

• safety glasses with side protection
• a full-face shield
• appropriate respiratory protection
• hearing protection
• close-fitting protective clothing
• protective footwear
• other equipment identified by the product instructions or workplace assessment

A face shield should not be treated as an automatic replacement for suitable safety glasses where both are appropriate.

Respiratory protection must be suitable for the particular dust, vapour, mist or fume being generated. A disposable nuisance-dust mask may not be appropriate for every polishing or chemical application.

4. Clothing, hair and jewellery

Rotating machinery can catch loose items.

Before operating polishing equipment:

• tie back long hair
• remove loose jewellery
• avoid loose sleeves, cords and clothing
• secure or remove anything that could contact a rotating component

Gloves may create an entanglement hazard around some rotating machinery. Whether gloves are appropriate depends on the equipment, task, instructions and risk assessment.

5. Machine inspection

Before each use, check the machine for signs of damage or abnormal condition, including:

• damaged power cords or plugs
• loose fasteners
• damaged switches
• missing or incorrectly fitted guards
• bent or damaged spindles
• unusual movement or looseness
• cracks, impact damage or overheating
• contamination that may affect safe operation

Do not use equipment that appears damaged, unsafe or incomplete.

6. Wheel and accessory compatibility

Before fitting a polishing wheel, abrasive wheel, drum, brush, pad or other rotating accessory, confirm:

• the accessory is intended for the machine and application
• the bore, thread or attachment size is correct
• the wheel diameter and width are suitable
• the accessory’s maximum rated speed is not lower than the machine’s operating speed
• the spindle, adaptor, flange and washer arrangement is correct
• the accessory can be secured without distortion or excessive force
• the accessory is free from visible damage

Do not modify a wheel bore, spindle, adaptor or mounting system unless the modification is expressly approved by the relevant manufacturer or a suitably qualified person.

7. Maximum operating speed

Never operate a wheel or accessory above its stated maximum rated speed.

Where a machine has variable speed, select a speed suitable for:

• the wheel or accessory rating
• the wheel diameter
• the material being polished
• the compound or abrasive being used
• the product instructions

Do not assume that the machine’s maximum speed is suitable for every accessory.

8. Inspecting polishing wheels and abrasives

Do not use a wheel, disc, belt, drum or abrasive product that shows:

• cracking
• tearing
• separation of layers
• significant distortion
• water or chemical damage
• severe contamination
• impact damage
• a damaged centre or mounting area
• any other condition that may affect safe rotation

Store wheels and abrasives in a clean, dry location protected from impact, excessive heat, moisture and contamination.

9. Guards and protective equipment

Do not remove, bypass or modify a machine guard or safety device unless expressly authorised by the manufacturer and permitted by applicable safety requirements.

Ensure adjustable guards, shields, tool rests and similar components are correctly positioned before operation.

A product photograph showing a machine for demonstration purposes should not be interpreted as permission to operate it without required guards or safety equipment.

10. Starting a machine

Before switching on:

• remove adjustment tools and loose objects
• ensure the accessory is securely fitted
• confirm the work area is clear
• stand away from the direct line of a newly fitted rotating accessory where practicable
• ensure the machine is stable or securely mounted

Allow the machine to reach operating speed without applying a workpiece.

Switch off immediately if there is excessive vibration, unusual noise, burning smell, sparking, wobble or another abnormal condition.

11. Using the workpiece safely

Where practical, workpieces should be clean, free from loose parts and suitably controlled.

Do not polish a workpiece that:

• cannot be held or supported safely
• contains loose components that may detach
• has sharp projections that may catch the wheel
• contains unknown coatings or contamination
• may release hazardous dust or fumes without suitable controls

Small or irregular workpieces may require a jig, clamp, fixture or alternative polishing method.

12. Heat and fire risk

Polishing and abrasive operations can generate heat and sparks.

Keep the operating area clear of:

• flammable liquids
• combustible dust accumulations
• flammable vapours
• unprotected fuel sources
• materials that may ignite from heat or sparks

Allow heated workpieces and machine components to cool before handling or storage.

Be aware that polishing residue and fine metal dust may present additional hazards depending on the material and conditions.

13. Dust, fumes and ventilation

Polishing, sanding and surface preparation may release dust, fibres, residues, vapours or fumes.

The appropriate controls may include:

• local exhaust extraction
• general ventilation
• dust collection
• isolation of the process
• appropriate respiratory protection
• safe cleaning and disposal procedures

Do not use compressed air to disperse hazardous dust where this would create an exposure or contamination risk.

Customers using products in a workplace are responsible for assessing and controlling workplace exposure risks.

14. Polishing compounds and chemical products

Before using a polishing compound, cleaner, liquid or chemical product:

• read the product label
• review the Safety Data Sheet where applicable
• confirm compatibility with the surface
• test on a small inconspicuous area where appropriate
• use suitable ventilation and protective equipment
• avoid mixing products unless expressly permitted
• follow storage and disposal instructions

Keep chemical products in their original labelled containers unless a compliant workplace process requires otherwise.

Do not transfer chemical products into food, drink or unlabelled containers.

15. Safety Data Sheets

A Safety Data Sheet provides information about a hazardous chemical’s classification, hazards, safe handling, storage, personal protection, first aid, emergency response and disposal.

Workplaces using hazardous chemicals may have additional duties concerning SDS access, registers, storage, training, exposure controls and emergency procedures.

An SDS is not a substitute for a workplace risk assessment.

16. Test a product before general use

Materials, coatings and finishes can react differently to polishing compounds, cleaners and abrasives.

Where practical, test the selected process on a small and inconspicuous area before treating the entire surface.

A test area is particularly important where:

• the coating or material is unknown
• the surface is valuable or irreplaceable
• a chemical cleaner or abrasive is being used
• the appearance may change permanently
• the surface has previously been coated, repaired or treated

17. Electrical safety

Electrical equipment must be connected to a suitable electrical supply and used in accordance with its instructions.

Do not operate electrical equipment:

• with damaged cords, plugs or switches
• in wet conditions unless it is specifically designed and approved for that environment
• using an unsuitable voltage or frequency
• with damaged extension leads
• where a protective device repeatedly trips without investigation

Electrical installation, modification or repair must be carried out by an appropriately qualified person where required by law.

Disconnect equipment from power before changing accessories, cleaning, clearing a blockage or performing maintenance.

18. Children and unauthorised users

Keep machines, rotating accessories, abrasives, compounds and chemical products away from children and unauthorised users.

Do not leave connected or operating machinery unattended.

Store starting keys, switches, batteries or power connections securely where unauthorised use is reasonably foreseeable.

19. Commercial and workplace use

Businesses and workplaces may have additional obligations under work health and safety, electrical safety, hazardous chemical and environmental laws.

Workplace users should ensure that:

• hazards are identified and risks assessed
• appropriate control measures are implemented
• operators receive suitable information, instruction and training
• equipment is maintained and inspected
• applicable SDS documents are available
• required chemical registers and records are maintained
• emergency procedures are established

20. Product advice from Polish Up

Polish Up may provide practical product-selection assistance based on information supplied by the customer.

For accurate advice, customers should provide:

• the material being polished

• spindle, arbor, bore and attachment dimensions
• the intended frequency and duration of use
• relevant photographs where useful

Advice may be unsuitable where information supplied by the customer is incomplete or incorrect.

Nothing in this section limits rights where a customer reasonably relies on Polish Up’s skill or judgement for a particular purpose disclosed before purchase.

21. Online articles and videos

Polish Up may publish articles, demonstrations, videos and social-media content concerning product selection and use.

This material:

• is general information
• may not apply to every machine, surface or workplace
• does not replace the product manual or SDS
• does not replace training or professional advice
• should not be relied upon to bypass a guard, warning or safety requirement

Viewers should confirm product compatibility and safety requirements before attempting a demonstrated process.

22. Modifications and repairs

Do not modify, dismantle or repair powered machinery unless appropriately qualified and authorised to do so.

Unauthorised work may:

• create an electrical or mechanical hazard
• alter operating speed or stability
• damage protective systems
• affect warranty assessment
• make the machine unsuitable for continued use

Contact Polish Up before arranging repair where a product may be faulty or under warranty.

23. Stop using an unsafe product

Stop using a product immediately if it:

• appears damaged or unsafe
• produces excessive vibration
• makes an unusual noise
• overheats
• produces a burning smell
• sparks abnormally
• has a damaged electrical connection
• has a cracked or unstable rotating accessory
• behaves differently from its normal operation

Disconnect the product from power where it is safe to do so and contact Polish Up for assistance.

24. Reporting a safety concern

Report a suspected product-safety issue to Polish Up promptly.

Please provide:

• your name and contact details
• order number or proof of purchase
• product name and model
• serial or batch number where applicable
• a description of the safety concern
• photographs or video where safe and reasonably possible
• details of any injury, damage or near miss
• details of how the product was being used

Do not recreate a dangerous condition merely to obtain photographs or video.

25. Product recalls and safety notices

If Polish Up becomes aware that a supplied product may present a safety risk, we may:

• stop supplying the product
• contact affected customers
• publish a safety or recall notice
• provide updated instructions or warnings
• arrange inspection, repair, replacement or refund
• request return or safe disposal of the product
• notify relevant regulators where required

Customers receiving a safety or recall notice should follow the instructions promptly and stop using the product where directed.

26. Keep order and product records

Customers should retain invoices, product labels, model information and serial numbers where applicable.

These records can assist with:

• warranty claims
• replacement-part identification
• product compatibility
• safety notices
• product recalls

27. Disposal

Products, chemical residues, packaging, electronic equipment and damaged accessories must be disposed of responsibly and in accordance with applicable instructions and local requirements.

Do not place chemical residues, contaminated materials, batteries or electrical products into general waste where prohibited or unsafe.

Review the product label and SDS for disposal information where applicable.
